Currently Listening To…

This song is, far and away, my favorite Dave song. Went to the concert at Fenway Park this past Friday and he played this live – was phenomenal. Take a listen. This is the best recording I could find, but I don’t think the complete version is on the video. Still, the meat of the song is there.

New single off their album Big Whiskey & The Groo Grux King. Can’t wait to see these guys at Fenway Park (for the third time, hot damn). R.I.P. Leroi.

No, Rob Thomas isn’t appearing on any hit MTV reality shows in the future. He is, however, ferrying a camel around behind him in this music video. I think he’s wearing eye liner too..but enough of that! It’s all about the song. The song’s awesome, and I’ve been on a nineties kick lately. So put it on in the background and go surf the net. People still say that, right?

I forgot this song existed until today. It’s super, ultra catchy. And fun to run to!

I’ve been on a Postal Service binge of sorts recently. This song, and Nothing Better are two my favorites so far from exploring Give Up. And as long as you keep telling yourself that the songs aren’t depressing, it’s fine! I’m most drawn to the synthesizer and the pseudo-techno, poppy beat. Ben Gibbard’s voice is just icing on the cake.

The Decemberists, O Valencia!
Okay, it’s freaking hard to find a) good recordings of indie bands (though The Decemberists are leaning more towards mainstream now..which is fine, I’m not a pretentious asshole about it) and b) videos that don’t suck. I thought I fulfilled both of those requirements when I started watching the official video, but the ending was MESSED UP, I’m telling you. So here’s two versions. One is a fan-made one which is actually really good, and the second is just a blank screen, but the audio quality is a bit better. I like the blank screen because you can turn it on in the background and do other things.

Okay…I know, I’m sorry. Just hear me out. Funniest music video ever? I think so. Shame the song is so catchy. Enjoy. :)

Sherwood is my new favorite band. They released a couple EPs – one in 2004, self-titled Sherwood, and another in 2006, Summer EP – but their debut album, A Different Light is one of the best albums I’ve listened to in a very, very long time. The music itself is relatively upbeat and poppy but still remains very much rooted in classic rock. My favorite song from this album is what this entry links to: “For the Longest Time.” If you like that, check out “Song In My Head” and “Middle Of The Night,” also on A Different Light. “I’ll Wait For You” from their 2007 album Sing, But Keep Going is also worth looking up if you’re interested in more of Sherwood.

Yes, I know this album was released in 1999 and no, I don’t care that it’s almost a decade old.

That’s right – in keeping with the trend of whiny, nasally singers I’ve chosen a band called The Cab as this week’s pick. One of my residents burned me a slew of CDs with a bunch of music on it, and this was the first band I had the chance to explore. They aren’t quite as bad as Something Corporate, but it’s definitely still a bit of a whinefest. Still, don’t knock it just yet. As usual, click anywhere in this paragraph to get a little taste of what’s up.

I know Something Corporate feels a bit too down in the dumps sometimes, but I find it’s really good chill music if you’re working on a paper (or a blog entry!). SC really incorporates the piano beautifully in their music, and it often remains the focus of each song throughout. They actually refer to themselves at “piano rock,” so it’s kind of an interesting genre. Favorites from this CD are “I Woke up in a Car,” “Good News,” and “The Astronaut.”
Also, I’m really sorry about these youtube links. I have no idea if the one I linked is the real band or not, it looks like a really horrible cover to be honest but as long as you get the idea I guess it’s alright. It’s either this or the song played over a montage of “Almost Famous.” I don’t get why people waste their time doing those things. Maybe I’ll write about that next.
And yes, that was a Whitesnake t-shirt at 2:13 in the video. Listen, I just like the music, it’s not my fault this video is embarrassing.

My brother introduced me to this band. They’re quirky, fun and fresh, and although most of their lyrics are utter nonsense they’re a blast to listen to. I can’t really make a comparison to any other bands because TNP has such a distinct sound – you have to listen for yourself.

I’m a sucker for oldies. “My Girl” and “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg” are two of my favorite songs. Yes, ever.

I didn’t actually get to attend this concert, but one of my friends who did missed being on the album cover by a few feet. I figure that puts me close enough to the real deal. Either way, this CD has one of the best (and one of the few) live recordings of “Cornbread” for when you’re in that southern livin’ kind of mood.
